Banco Santander has established its Retail and Commercial banking operations in China in a strategic alliance with Bank of Shanghai, our local partner, who has been present in China since 1995. Banco Santander is the 2nd biggest shareholder of Bank of Shanghai, who serves 11MM individual clients and 200,000 corporate clients.

Bank of Shanghai has the third largest banking network in Shanghai, wealthiest province in China. It started its expansion into the major provinces of the country with the establishment of its first branch in Ningbo in 2006. The expansion continued until 2013, year by which they had established themselves in 14 of the main cities in China, as well as setting its first subsidiary in Hong Kong. Currently, it has over 300 branches in mainland China, mostly in the main financial cities of Shanghai and Beijing as well as in the principal trading cities in the East coast and South of China.

Santander and Bank of Shanghai jointly offer a wide range of banking services to corporations and institutions, small-medium enterprises and its employees in China. Its multilingual team of employees of both banks forms the International Desk, which focuses on supporting clients of Santander Group in their commercial activities or establish themselves in China, together with clients of Bank of Shanghai that would like to do so in Latin America and Europe.
